Youth Salute 2016 additional info...

posted Mar 1, 2016, 1:01 PM by Kate Brendel

If your Junior student was nominated for the 2016 Youth Salute, and you would like more information, please read below.

The Greater Belleville Area Youth Leadership Council, is a chapter of The National Council on Youth Leadership, www.ncyl.org. We are a non-profit organization committed to the youth of tomorrow and for over the past thirty years held the local Youth Salute Program for surrounding areas high school juniors. This program is to recognize and honor the students who demonstrate good leadership abilities.

The students are nominated by their school and must hold a B average or higher, along with a leadership position(s) in their school and/or community.  The participating students are then required to; write an essay, be interviewed and photographed for the public display by Cedarleaf Photography; this is at no cost or obligation to them and is displayed at the St. Clair Square Mall.  Students who have fulfilled the commitments for the program are then invited at no cost, to attend a two day “Winner's Seminar”. This seminar is hosted in early August by the Southwestern Illinois College on their Belleville Campus.

During this seminar the speaker works with the students to help them to enhance their leadership abilities, team building skills and to prepare for the future. They get the opportunity meet other students just like themselves and many form lasting friendships. An awards ceremony is held for parents, family members and nominators on the evening of the second day, this is where the top Male & Female Youth Leader(s) of the Year are named. The top male and female will receive a monetary scholarship which varies each year and four will receive the chance to attend the “Town Meeting on Tomorrow” (TMOT) conference, with all expenses paid. TMOT is NCYL’s national meeting hosted for all of its chapter winners. Their conference held at Washington University has wonderful speakers and team coaches and is an outstanding experience for all who have the chance to attend. The students who have been chosen to attend TMOT have the chance to compete for scholarship monies from NCYL.

Congrats to all 2016 Salutes!
